ABSA Cape Epic 2011 has much promise. The 2011 Absa Cape Epic, which takes place in the Western Cape province of South Africa between March 27 and April 3, promises to be rougher and tougher than the seven previous events. It starts with a 27km ‘prologue’ ride in Cape Town and ends at Lourensford Wine Estate in Somerset West.

At a media event hosted by the 221 Waterfront restaurant in Cape Town this week, it was announced that a blind man will be competing this year. Hein Wagner, 39, from Cape Town, was born without sight, but certainly not without vision. A man of extreme fitness and mental strength, Wagner will be joining his friend, Gerrie Olivier, on a tandem bicycle to attempt the gruelling 707km off-road event.

Wagner is no stranger to extreme challenges and was until recently the fastest blind driver in the world, having reached 269km/h in a Maserati back in 2005. His lengthy list of physical achievements include completing the Cape to Rio yacht race at the age of 22, completing marathons such as the ING New York City Marathon and Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon, going white-water rafting in the Zambezi River and completing the Standard Chartered Ironman event in Korea.

Sinethemba/ Cape Epic Initiative

Sinethemba has been blessed with a situation where one of the Epic cyclists for 2011 started discussions with Lezanne de la Rey (CEO of FHKNWA) in 2010 to explore the possibility of raising money and awareness for Sinethemba and special needs by attempting the Epic whilst being sponsored.

Rowan Marais and his Epic team mate Lourens van der Westhuizen both keen and experienced cyclists will attempt the unbelievable challenging Epic that has been christened the “Tour de France of Mountain bikes”.  The Sinethemba Team, as we now call them, will cycle in wonderfully designed and branded Sinethemba cycling gear that will be launched on the 10th March 2011 at Bontevlei close to Stellenbosch during a cheese and wine evening. It promises to be a lovely evening where we will send off the cyclist in the proper Sinethemba fashion.

There are different ways of participating in the sponsorship initiative for example, Rowan and Lourens can be sponsored per kilometer or there can be a once off sponsorship made.

For more information on sponsorship, Sinethemba Special Care Centre or if you would like to attend the Sinethemba / Cape Epic Launch evening please contact Lezanne de la Rey on 021 785 5389 or

We want to wish Rowan and Lourens all the best for the Epic 2011 and know that it will be an experience of a life time! The Sinethemba Team also would like to thank them for this wonderful initiative and what they are doing for the field of special needs and especially the children of Sinethemba Special Care Centre.

Go Sinethemba Team Go!!!
